Have you ever want to build your own .deb package for distribution ? Ubuntu's checkinstall[1][2] helps us to make custom .deb package. CheckInstall keeps track of all files installed by a "make install" or equivalent, creates a Slackware, RPM, or Debian package with those files, and adds it to the installed packages database, allowing for easy package removal or distribution. With checkinstall we can create Debian, RPM and Slackware package easily[3],
# in the source folder, usually we do
# ./configure
# make
# make install
# checkinstall can be used to make .deb file without actual install on the system
# make checkinstall
$sudo checkinstall--install=no --fstrans=yes make
